Pet Health
Condition Overview
The standard of 42 teeth is normal for all adult dogs, whether large or small breed. An exception is the hairless breeds, such as the Chinese Crested, because the hairless gene also modifies dentition (the development of teeth and their arrangement in the mouth).
Symptoms
After counting the teeth, you will find either more or less than the standard 42 teeth for a dog.
Causes
Some dogs carry a genetic mutation for missing teeth. Doberman Pinschers may have fewer than the normal eight premolars. This is considered a show fault but has no real significance in terms of the dogs health, unless missing teeth shift the bite. Genetic variations of this type usually are hereditary.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis can be made by counting the number of teeth in the dogs mouth.
Treatment
Treatment is dependent upon specific needs.
Prevention
There is no prevention for this condition.
