Plastic Dish Nasal Dermatitis

Condition Overview

This is a localized form of depigmentation that affects the nose and lips.

The involved skin may become irritated and inflamed.

It is caused by eating out of plastic and rubber food and water dishes that contain the chemical pbenzylhydroquinone. This chemical is absorbed through the skin and inhibits the synthesis of melanin, the substance that produces dark pigment in the skin.

Diagnosis is made by physical examination.

The problem can be corrected by switching to glass, ceramic, or stainless steel bowls for the dog's food and water.

You can prevent this condition by replacing any plastic or rubber food and water dishes with glass, ceramic, or stainless steel bowls.

Please contact your veterinarian if you have questions regarding this condition.
