Gastric Tumors

Condition Overview

A stomach tumor should be considered in an older dog with sporadic vomiting.

Symptoms

The vomitus often contains old, partially digested blood. Anemia and weight loss are frequently found. Tumors in the pyloric canal region often cause gastric outflow obstruction.

Causes

Adenocarcinoma is the most common malignant tumor of the stomach, Benign tumors such as leiomyomas and polyps also occur.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis is made by gastroscopy and biopsy of the tumor.

Treatment

Surgical treatment involves removing the part of the stomach containing the tumor. The prognosis for dogs with benign tumors is excellent. Malignant tumors are difficult to cure.

There is no know prevention for this condition.
