Origin
The English foxhound originated in Great Britain.
Date Of Origin
The breeds history can be traced back to the 1700's.
History
This dog was developed in Great Britain for trailing red fox. It is believed to be a cross of bloodhound types or greyhounds or other sent hounds. It was first imported to the U.S. in the mid-eighteenth century, where it was quickly embraced.
Description
This is a medium to large size muscular dog with a strong head and pronounced brow. The muzzle is long and wide. The medium size drop ears may be cropped smaller. It has a long neck, a deep chest, and straight legs. The short glossy coat is of any hound color, black, tan, and white in any combination.
Temperament
This is an energetic and enthusiastic dog with a strong prey drive. It gets along with almost everyone including children and other dogs.
Uses
It is considered the nonpareil of hounds, used especially in fox hunting in combination with mounted hunters. It can trot along through brambles, marshes and sunny countryside for five or six hours without stopping.
