Condition Overview

Botulism is a paralytic disease caused by neurotoxins produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum.

This disease is acquired by eating infected carcasses or improperly canned vegetables and meats.

Diagnosis

Treatment

The outlook for recovery is good if the disease does not progress rapidly. Antitoxins are available. Mildly affected dogs recover without treatment.

Prevention

Do not let your dog scrounge for food around garbage collection areas, or while in the woods. The consumption of dead and decaying animal flesh is extremely unhealthy and can cause many different health conditions.
